Large Totara burl dish

Elm bowl

Large Elm flat dish, cut from Waitohu Valley Road, Manakau (Aitkens Farm)

I was given a large half meter square slab of Elm by my Aunty Cush and Uncle Brian. They had milled it from their neighbours farm, on Waitohu Valley Road, Manakau in the 1980's.  The slab had sat in the shed on their farm, Hyfield - which my Grandad had first purchased and cleared in the late 1960s - until they left the farm.  The slab moved with them to Tauranga when they bought an avacado orchard there, and moved again to Church Road in Napier, when they moved there.

I turned this flat dish for my mum as a present.

Project 5 - an interesting lip

This was a blank of dark chocolate coloured wood (unknown variety).
It turned out to be very hard, dry and dense.  Very challenging to turn.
